Your path to becoming a company manager
Most entry-level positions require a bachelor's degree in engineering, geology, or a related field. Technical certifications and safety training are also highly valued. Many companies offer graduate programs for recent graduates.
The timeline varies, but typically it takes 8-12 years of progressive experience to reach senior management. This includes 3-5 years in technical roles, 3-5 years in supervisory positions, and additional time in middle management before advancing to company manager level.
Key skills include strong technical knowledge, leadership abilities, project management, financial acumen, strategic thinking, and excellent communication. Understanding HSE (Health, Safety, and Environment) regulations is critical. An MBA or executive education can accelerate advancement.
Common paths include: Technical track (Engineer → Senior Engineer → Engineering Manager → Operations Manager → General Manager), Operations track (Field Operator → Supervisor → Operations Manager → Regional Manager), or Commercial track (Analyst → Manager → Commercial Director → General Manager).
International experience is highly valued and often essential for senior management roles. Working in different regions provides exposure to diverse operations, regulatory environments, and business cultures. Many companies require at least one international assignment before promoting to executive positions.
Pursue industry certifications (PMP, Six Sigma), advanced degrees (MBA, MSc), leadership development programs, and membership in professional organizations like SPE or AAPG. Seek mentorship, take on cross-functional projects, and stay current with industry trends and emerging technologies.
